Help i need drivers!!!!! =O?

When some things went wrong one time i thought i should download driver updates,

And i came across this software called Driver Detective, And it gave me a small list of what Drivers Need updating but to download them Via Driver Detective, it costs money......

One of my main concerns it the driver for my Nvidia GeForce4 MX 440, And on the site i can't seem to find the driver,

If possible could you link me to a download where i can get that driver please and if possible these too:

I did a simple google search and found it, you could do the same for the rest of your drivers or head to http://www.driversguide.com which is the biggest archive for drivers and locate all the drivers you need.

(driversguide.com requires free registration, it's not a paysite, FYI.).

How do I get my computer to notice a new installed hardrive?

I bought a new hardrive, this is my set up.

2 IDE ports

primary

C: = XP

F: =slave

secondary

DVD

*new hardrive*

the startup recognizes it, but windows doesn't... am I missing something?

How do I get my computer to notice a new installed hardrive?
make sure your jumper settings on the drive are set correctly

go into your bios setup at boot up time and make sure that the HD is showing

to get into bios you hit the key that it says to hit in order to get into setup, tap it once a second or hair faster than that til it goes into setup

usually its F1 that gets you into Bios

but on some bios versions it is the tab key

if those two are good then go to control panel and device manager and make sure the Hd shows up in the list of hardware and that theres no exclamation mark or anything like that next to it

if so then theres a problem, also if it doesnt show up in the hardware list at all

checking jumper setting is the first thing to check though,

if it was my system i would put the new HD on the primary IDE cable and set the jumper to slave setting

and go into Bios setup and set it to boot first if it has your OS on it and if not then make it second or third or fourth boot

Reply:If there are drivers for them. They need to be installed. Also they need to be formatted to a filing system. I recommend FAT32, but its preference.

Reply:Go to control panel, computer administration, disk management.

You should see your new hard drive on the lower right hand side. It is most probably not formatted/initialized.

Right click over the drive and select format/import etc. You will want to partition the drive also.
Reply:When you say that Windows doesn't recognize it, have you tried through the Disk Management tool? Go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management and select Disk Management. It may start a wizard or just show the drive as unformatted space that you can format.

Paradigm %26lt;shudder%26gt; - sorry I hate that word in a business context. It smacks of a clueless manager who found a word to use rather than "thingie". Sorry, no disrespect intended toward your good self, it really is the general use of the word that gets me as an engineer.

Nothing, **absolutely nothing** is more important in programming that good programming skills. Debugging skills, knowledge of algorithms, ability to write understandable documentation, knowledge of computer architecture, the ability to cogitate on a problem for a day and a half, and solve it by producing 100 lines of code that works on the first try.

Note at no point did I mention a language or a design methodology. A poorly thought through algorithm implemented using the best language or design methodology will still be a bad algorithm.

There is far too much emphasis put on languages, and not enough on fundamentals. I can, and do pick up a new language in a couple of weeks. My tool set as a programmer is still growing after 30 years - that is something that you don't pick up in a couple of weeks.

all of these languages have their valid use; some are only used for niches, though (i.e. C++). Here at work we even use assembly language.

also keep in mind that many systems (i.e. embedded systems, micro controllers) only support a few languages - i.e. C or Java.

Concerning paradigms - i don't think there are new ones. OOP (object oriented programming) is already quite old but still popular. Others like aspect oriented programming didn't become that popular.
Reply:When you talk about languages, C++ and C are still commonly used, with Java also near the top.

If you're talking about paradigms, OOP (object oriented programming) is certainly at the forefront. Instead of procedural programming i.e. executing line after line until you get to the end of a program, you create objects containing code. An object could be a car or a person or any noun, really. Object Oriented Programming was probably inspired by game programmers who needed a better way to describe objects in their game (e.g. weapons, rooms, levels etc) - but I don't know really.

With web development, MVC (Model-View-Controller) is a very popular paradigm - it is even encouraged by Sun Microsystems for developing in JSP. The idea of MVC is that you separate logic from presentation, which is a big issue in web development.

It's important to know the most commonly used languages, but it's by far more important to know the underlying concepts of programming and application design.

Installing WinXP on Compact Flash?

I have a SanDisk Extreme IV 4 gig Compact Flash. I think it's IDE compatibale. I used a CD-ROM drive and connected my CF card. The WinXP installer seems to see it fine and installs some of the files just fine. However, at re-boot to start the 2nd phase of the install process it goes back to the original step and wants to install the preliminary files again. I hit OK and tells me an OS is already installed. What's up?? The CF card is big enough to hold the WinXP. The bios is setup to as IDE-0 Master C:.

Installing WinXP on Compact Flash?
CF card connected via USB? You need to set BIOS to boot from USB in that case.

If it is connected via and IDE adapter you will need to get the F6 (windows installation) driver for that IDE adapter and during the first step of installation watch the bottom of the screen for the F6 prompt.

so I have an old school IDE drive as C drive, where my OS is installed within. and I just added a new SATA as D drive, where my game will be installed within.

now, if I run the game from D drive, which's a SATA drive, will it get the speed advantage from being in a SATA drive? or it will be still running on the old IDE speed simply because my OS is running in the background in a IDE drive.

The game speed doesn't rely on the hard drive, although loading will be faster. The speed the game runs at will depend entirely on your CPU's frequency (speed), amount of RAM installed, video GPU frequency and the amount and frequency of RAM on your graphics card.

The OS won't slow the drive a bit.

the os will run from IDE, and when the game needs to access disk it will run from the SATA.

but - the drive is unlikely to the the determining factor of the speed of your game. Your CPU speed, memory and graphics card speed will be the biggest factors. most games are setup to use disk when they load between sections, not continuously. One exception is that the game may need more memory than you have. then it will use disk as 'swap space' . is as a type of virtual drive that expands the memory. this will have defaulted to the ide drive - so will run more slowly. this should be a small effect unless you are really starved of RAM.

right click on my computer and go to properties, advanced, performance, advanced, virtual memory to change the location

What is the best way to connect a 2nd hard drive?

I have a computer with a dvd drive, a dvd burner, and a single hard drive. I only have 2 IDE connections, so I can only have 4 drives total. I want to copy video to the second drive. Should I connect drive C to the primary IDE with one of the DVD drives as a slave, and connect the 2nd hard drive the same way to the secondary IDE,

or,

should I connect both hard drives to the primary IDE, with drive C as the master?

I want to end up with the most efficient setup for each hard drive.

Depends which one has more space.
Reply:As with IDE connections. What ever the slowest device is on that cable will determine the fastest speed available for that channel. Thus if your DVD is the slowest then that will be the fastest transfer rate you will get off of that channel. If however your HDD is the same transfer rate as the harddisk(HDD) then it doesn't matter which channel your drives are hooked up to. But general setup, would be to leave the HDDs together and the DVDs together. since most HDDs are faster than the DVDs. you must also keep in mind that the IDE channels can only read from 1 device at a time unlike SCSI which has a simultanious bi-directional channel.

--Tried to delete the folders the virus added to my comp, could'nt. Got Norton, ran

it. Also ran ad-aware, spybot, webaso, registry mechanic(?), Stinger, and Avast!

--Plugged drive into another computer and ran Norton until it says its clean, still

does'nt work.

--Now as soon as logon screen comes up, and I click on it to enter Xp, it says saving

settings, logging off. I can't get into XP at all! Sometimes the desktop will flash on

for a second, then go back to login screen.

--Tried to use F8, F12, F2 keys. Tried Safe mode. Tried to make boot discs from web,

but they just don't activate? Tried to make dos prompt boot disc too.

--Tried 3 differnt Xp cds, plus Nopix, failed.

--Took drive out and copied all my important files to another computer.

--When I go into BIOs and do 'boot from from CD', it gives me the message,

SATA Secondary drive 0 not found.

Primary Drive 1 not found.

--In Bios I can see that it labels both drives correctly. One is SATA (main c:)

another is IDE.

--Please help. Please use baby language. Really. I've asked on another board too, but

seems am out of options, If you'd like a copy of their suggestions I could paste them

here maybe?

This is a rather frustrating problem. I'm working on a Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop (though I'm sure that is of little consequence), running Windows XP sp2.

This problem started suddenly a few months ago and I have not been able to repair it since.

My programming IDE, Dev-C++, will not start. This is not an error with the program, as a fresh install will function perfectly everytime. Rather, when I restart my computer the previously functional binarys are invalidated in some way. A hex viewer tells me the data has not changed. If I uninstall the program, then reinstall, it functions as expected until I restart... then the problem starts anew.

This is a problem that I have seen before, but I do not have an easy solution to it. Any ideas, internet world?

You most probably have a virus, since there should be no problem in restarting the computer, and you must have Norton Antivirus which doesn't stop any virus, it is really a really bad software.

Is this a good setup for gaming?
Pretty low spec. The PSU is probably substandard as you haven't specified a make. 2GB RAM is the minimum these days, so thats OK, but you're only using DDR I - go for a motherboard that supports DDR II instead.

The Sempron processor isn't exactly great. Go with a proper X2 or Cure 2 Duo instead.

A 5400 RPM drive is super slow, and maxtor drives aren't known for their reliability.

The ATi X700 is a budget card. No good for high-end gaming. Go for a GeForce 6800 ot Radeon x1950.

The gigabit NIC is OK.
Reply:It's not exactly great setup. You lack a good video card, for the most part. Semprons aren't the fastest processors out there but for gaming it's ok since games do not utilize cache much.

The hard drive is also a bit slow. 5400RPM hard drives are about 30% slower than 7200RPM, which is the standard these days.

You should be ok with low/mid settings for most games.
Reply:If you're going to be playing the latest and greatest, realistically it won't run that great. It's a lower end processor. The Harddrive is slow, and your RAM and Video Cards are not very great either.

Don't get me wrong the computer will run well if you run World of Warcraft on it or some of the games out today. But if you're doing hardcore, spec tweaked, high settings gaming. Than no the computer isn't good for something like that.

Overall if you're not some ultra gamer who has to have the latest and greatest, than you probably won't notice much of anything until you start playing some of the best games that come out in the future.

But if you're not that kind of gamer and you just like to buy some games here or there right now. It'll be fine.

From my experience, having only one HDD and CDrom, the way you connect them doesn't really matter. Just put them both on master. CDrom on Primary and Hard Drive on secondary, that is guaranteed that it will work(unless the HDD or CDrom is defective).

Computer Will Go Blank Before It Actually Starts?

Hi,

My computer just started doing this recently. When I start my computer its start up normal. It will show like its loading the bios (if thats what its really doing lol) But then the screen will go black for about 10 mins. If I press anything it will give me an error saying that keyboard is not connected.

But if I leave it alone (for the 10 mins or so) It will start. It will show me the big "Windows" with the little bar at the bottom running acrross and continue on working normaly.

Im just tired of having to turn it on and having to wait for like 10 mins looking a t a black screen till it starts.

I'v tried going into the bios but it wont let me. All it will show is no keyboard connected.

This menu no longer shows but right before it started working again (I guess after the big freeze). It would give me these options: 1. Normal 2: Sata Primary Drive 3: Primary Master Drive 4: Diskette Drive 5: Hard-Disk Drive C: 6: IDE CD-ROM Device 7: USB Flash Device8: System Start up(out of space)

i have a chaintech 9cjs zenith board. i just bought a sata b/c my ide failed. i only have 1 sata installed and windows won't load. i installed the raid driver before installing windows and now on the loading windows screen (with the blue bar scrolling), it freezes. i've waited 10 minutes and nothing has happened. before i installed the raid drivers, but installed windows, at this screen i would be taken to a blue screen telling me there was an error. can anyone suggest anything??? thanks a lot.

Reply:make sure your sata is identified by your board (system) check bios and choose appropriate Sata choice.

Then re-install windows. I have no idea about RAID. but as far as I know RAID needs 2 SATA disks. Try without RAID. This may cause freezing.

Reply:you did not mention the OS that you are trying to install. WinXP should not need the RAID driver unless you are installing a raid configuration. Win2k will need a driver but I have had to make the floppy driver from the install versions and not the floppy that came with my motherboard. I had to download the latest drivers and extract the SATA drive controller and chipset driver. Then build a special floppy config file to get this to install on Win2k. Hopefully you are installing WinXP and not 2k.

the other way I got this to install on Win2K was to install on a PATA drive and create and image with Image Magic 10. Then switch the SATA drive and move the PATA to a USB drive. Boot from a image magic floppy and use image magic to copy the PATA to the SATA. This got the SATA drive to work as the main "C" drive.

Reply:I had a similar problem and I solved it by going into BIOS and enabling the serial ATA and configuring the IDE's. Some motherboards are unable to do this automatically. Make sure you have the serial ATA drivers installed. To do this run the windows setup from dos and when the blue screen comes up install this 3rd party drivers. In Motherboards such as the lan party pro you need to enable this in order for the OS to boot and choose the right sequence, and in some like Asrock you need to install the driver as bios wont recognize it on its own.

Reply:I am not sure why you need the RAID driver. Do you have a RAID card installed in your system or does the motherboard have a RAID adapter? If you have only one SATA drive, you don't need the RAID driver. Obviously it is looking for the RAID adapter and is freezing up on not finding it.

Check your BIOS to see if it recognizes the drive as a Primary drive. You may have to set it SATA0 to have it be the boot device.

I would suggest reinstalling Windows without the RAID driver.

put your windows install disc in the cd drive and choose '4'. This way you can do a clean install, just make sure you have drivers for your network card/modem.

If you do not have an install disc, choose option 7

If you're computer came with a backup partition (which most new manufacture computers should) then simply run it, it should tell you what to press at the beginning when you first turn on your PC.

Why won't my Dell Dimension 2400 boot from a CD?

When I turn it on, the DELL screen loads up and after a while, it beeps twice and says:

Primary drive 1 not found

Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility

If I hit F1, it does nothing. If I hit F2, it goes into the BIOS settings. When I go to the boot menu, it beeps and gives me these options:

1.Normal

2.Hard-Disc Drive C:

3.IDE CD-Rom Device

4.System Setup

5.IDE Drive Diagnostics

6.Boot to Utility Partition

1,2, and 6 basically lead to a blank screen. 3 will do the same thing but I can hear the CD spinning at first. 5 gives this message:

Drive 0: Maxtor 6Y120P0 - Fail. Return Code: 7

Drive 1: No IDE device

I originally had a second hard drive hooked up and it said: Fail. Return Code: 7 under Drive 1 so I disconnected it hoping to save it.

2.Can I use my comp again w/o getting a new hard drive?

3.Are both my drives completely toast?

4.What can I do to recover my files?

5.Is there an online site that can give me more info?

You mentioned that the CD ROM seems to be spooling, right? Have you tried to boot with a Windows XP Setup Disc?

Have you had a lightning storm or a electrical surge of some sort?

Sorry about the series of questions. Here is what I am getting at:

If the Primary IDE channel is producing failure codes on both drives... you might not want rule out the motherboard going bad. It is VERY unlikely that you would have 2 disc drives fail at the same time unless there has been a major surge that damaged both of them, but... in that scenario, the motherboard will get fried before the drives would.

My conclusion with the available information thus far is motherboard.....

For future information, avoid swap harddrives like you are doing (direct IDE installation. Get an external USB/Firewire enclosure and change out harddrive that way.

I am pretty sure you are running NTFS, and depending on cluster size (part of system settings), you can easily corrupt your drives when you swap it from one computer into another one (even if both are XP). Imagine, you have a harddrive that was preformatted by one PC with cluster size x, and it's partially full. Now you plug it into another computer that's trying to write with cluster size y....

External enclosure to make sure both systems recognize the device via USB or Firewire, and the device would make sure it's using the same cluster size, etc...

So... you now have 2 corrupt harddrives. Repair them by putting them in external enclosures and running a data recovery software (www.download.com).

Back to your computer, the fact that it won't even boot into CD ROM tells me the motherboard is very likely to be the culprit.

To be completely certain, use the CD Rom from your 2nd computer to see if it will boot.

If it boots, your problem is a bad CD Rom and 2 corrput harddrives.

If it still doesn't boot, you have a bad motherboard with 2 corrupt harddrives.
Reply:If it won't boot from hard drive or CD, you may have a bad controller on the motherboard causing communication problems. Open the case, then power on the system with the case open. Listen closely to try to hear any clicking noises coming from the hard drive. If there's noise, put your hand up against the drive bay to feel whether the drive is spinning. If it's spinning but not making noise, you should be able to shut down, pull the drive out, and put it in an external USB enclosure to access the files when connecting that enclosure/drive to another PC. I have a similar problem with a customer's Dimension XPS system (about 4 years old), and the problem is the motherboard, not the HD. It won't boot from the HD or the CD. Turns out there was a flood that probably messed up the computer.
Reply:The drive is failing and needs to be replaced. It is a hardware failure. CHKDSK /R will recover bad sectors and you may be able to get your data off of the drive, but it is a software solution that repairs the file system and relocates data out of the bad areas. The bad areas are still there and the drive will eventually fail to the point of no return. Just so we are clear, CHKDSK /R is not a permanent solution on a failing hard drive no matter what Dell might say if u call.

It is absolutely fine, it's just that windows closes the console when it's done; if you opened up your own console and run it from the console it wouldn't close. To prevent this when running it graphically(by just clicking it), you usually would use a getchar thing or something or in c you would do a system("pause") on window.s

I just added a new sata drive and installed vista on it, and i also have vista installed onto my OLD IDE hard drive. The current vista i have, which requires me to activate my cd key, is the same one from the one i installed on my previous ide C:. I tried to activate onto this new C:, it says my cd key is already in used. The thing is that i formated my old C: and now it still won't let me activate it. Someone please tell me what to do, thanks!

Check whether the key is correct or not. And if your vista license is only for one processor, you can't activate further more. contact microsoft support for further assistance.

Reply:If you have been using Borland for c++ development, it would be best to get their development kit for Java, as you would be mostly used to it. If you were not using it, IMHO, it would be the best to use. You do have to pay for it.

I would like a IDE that has the ability to load PHP without it being installed on the local machine and also provide debugging features such as watching variables and step into code.

You need php loaded onto a web server to work. It is so simple to add break codes to the scripts for testing, you don't need any front end.

I am kind of new to programming so please don't criticize me. This is the source code for the program I am trying to build:

Reply:It is not possible to perform modulus on float, it's not always clear what the right answer is, nor does it have any logical basis (modulus does with real integers). Plus the loss from precision makes it not very useful, I can't think of a time when you would want to do that.

In .Net IDE We have Intellisence facility which will give automatically class methods and properties etc when we press dot(.) operator. While moving the mouse pointer on class properties or function names we will get help text about that properties. How can I give the help text to my class properties and functions.

You use XML comments. Basically, XML comments are tags that you put before methods, classes, etc... We enter these XML comments after a triple backslash.

Exception when I run a program developed with C# .net 2.0?

I used visual studio 2005 to developed an application. it was working well. recenty i used "Computerinfo" class of "Microsoft.VisualBasic.Devices" namespace. for which I had to add a visual basic dll as reference. But my problem is when I run the program from Visual Studio 2005 IDE It works fine. but after publishing It throws an exception with 'detail', 'quit' and 'continue' button.

I recall reading somewhere that not all of the "My" objects available to VB function properly in C#. Since most of the objects provided through the "My" keyword are available to C# through other means, it's probably better in the long run to spend a little more time to write the code for that directly. You didn't say exactly what property you were trying to access when the exception occurred, but from what I can see that's available through the ComputerInfo class you'll probably have to resort to pinvoke to get most of that info.

Examining arrays in Visual Studio C++ debugger?

OK. I'm at a breakpoint in the debugger and now I want to examine the values stored in my arrays. How do I get Visual Studio debugger to show me the data in the arrays? I don't want to see just one value at a time; I want to see the values contained in array indices [100] to [199] for example.

Surely there has to be an easy way to do this. I've been doing it since the 90's in the Borland IDE and since the 80's on VAXs.

And while I'm at it, is there any way that I can plot data from arrays while in the debugger like you can in Matlab?

I don't know about other versions, but right now I'm using VS2005, and I can see the values in an array while stopped in debug mode by right clicking on the variable and selecting "Quick Watch..."

That will produce a nice little window listing all the values in the array. I'm not sure if that's exactly what you want, but that's the closest thing that I'm aware of.

Personally, I have to use VS everyday, and I'm convinced it's the biggest piece of trash IDE that I've ever used.

Reply:One way is to specify the index in your debugger. Like arrayname[105] - that should give you the exact value at that index.

If yours were fixed length arrays, getting the value of a range would not be difficult. The debugger would then provide a small + sign beside your array object in the quick watch, and you could expand it to see all the elements.

But with free pointers, the debugger cannot do that. Becasue it does not know the length of the array. And Microsoft has taken a very tight fisted approach towards accessing out of bounds values, even in read only mode by the debugger - so it does not take any risk.

If you are so hell bent on seeing the values of a range, you have to do some little extra work dude:

Option A: Use the managed framework and declare an arraylist object, load it using your native array specifying the length. Your debugger will instantly show all the elements of the array list object expandable/ collapsible with a + sign

Option B: Write them down to a file on the hard disk ([index]:[value] format), open and inspect the file while debugging.

Option C: Declare a test only fixed length array (that you can comment later on), copy the contents of the native pointer array to it, and let the debugger do the rest.

Option D, E, F, ...: Give it up. There are better things to do in life.

observed pressure = nRT / (V-nb) - a(n/V)^2

the nb is a volume correction

and a(n/V)^2 is a pressure correction. the 'a' is correcting for the attractions between particles. (so A is true)

I think B is false because van der waals forces involve gravitation pull between particles, not anything to do with charge. so particles only attract each other.

my book also says "a real gas consists of atoms or molecules that have finite volumes. therefor, the volume available to a given particle in a real gas is less then the volume of the container because the gas particles themselves take up some of the space. to account for the discrepency, van der waals represented the actual volumes as shown in the equation. n is the number of moles of gas and b is an empirical constant."

How do I change my c drive for a new larger one?

my new Dell came with a 60 GB HD and I would like to change it for a bigger one, it does not come with an extra SATA or IDE port so I cannot add a secondary drive, the thing is, I want to move all of the contents, including the OS (vista home basic) so, I'd love some recommendations.

If you have an IDE great. I never bother with them. I just grab whatever text editor is lying around (nano, vi, gvim and either gedit when I'm on Gnome and kedit here on KDE) do my writing with a terminal window open, save it to the directory I'm in in my terminal and do one of the following at the terminal prompt:

gcc -o %26lt;program name%26gt; %26lt;program name%26gt;.c

g++ -o %26lt;program name%26gt; %26lt;program name%26gt;.cc (the extension for c++ files I use. If you use cpp fine).

gcc -o %26lt;program name%26gt; -g %26lt;program name%26gt;.c

I think you can figure out the last one. If you don't use the -o switch then gcc will compile your program into a file called a.out. Back when I started using gcc in the early 90's (around 1991) I used to change the name rather than use the extension except I've always been a fool

Ubuntu is in many ways just like any other linux. Which other ways? Let's just say once you're used to linux in the best possible ways. I have issues with Synaptic, Update Manager and some of the security settings but those aren't the whole of the OS by any other means. What I have to say next applies to any other Linux and most unixes.

To run the program, if you have used the -o switch, type:

./%26lt;program name%26gt;

The ./ or dot slash as it is called, tells the os to look in the current directory for the program if the current directory is not in your path, which by default it is in Microsoft Windows, but not always in Unix/GNU/Linux. If you have used the -g switch then just type:

gdb %26lt;program name%26gt; .

That starts the Gnu Debugger, gdb. You can get a listing of the first 10 lines by typing "list" or l. Oh, heck. Type "info gdb" at the command line, assuming you have it installed and you will get the user's manual. If you don't have gdb installed type "sudo apt-get install gdb" rather than going to some gui.

What I'm talking about is the part of Linux that depends most heavily on GNU tools (among which is GCC the c compiler), so I'm talking about GNU/Linux. If you know how to handle your IDE great, but you really don't need it.

have you done a virus scan ? back in the old days (of win98), computer viruses used to knock c-drives into compatibility mode.

if you've done that, you can always remove them from the device manager and reboot - that will make windows re-recognize them and that might get rid of the problem too (tho you'll be prompted to reboot several more times).

i've also had that problem if the bios settings were messed up (say, if the floppy drive was deactivated or the cd-rom had its settings misconfigured).

Try not learn a programming language with the heavy use of a particular IDE like Netbeans. That way you know the concepts not fixing yourself on ever changing IDEs. There are lots of good tutorials on Java online you would have to just search.JDK 6 is still new and I am assuming the API would have limited resources for a learner's perspective.

I write console programs that run on a linux cluster. I have to work on my windows laptop a lot, so I write using MS IDE then SCP the stuff to the cluster, compile and run it. Is there an easier way? It would be great to hit a button in an IDE and have it automatically update the files on the cluster, compile it and run it. Any ideas?

Use cygwin to install a linux shell on your windows machine or use dev c. Dev c usually goes into linux pretty well.

What I've been doing for the past few years is, programming on Windows ( for intellisense reasons...love that stuff ), and I have that stuff checked into my cvs server. Whenever I get to the Linux machines, I compile the newest version found on cvs server and run it.

This is, unfortunately, the best way I've found to do it. ( I'll be keeping an eye on this topic in case someone has a better alternative )

Actually I want to know what is the basic difference between them. What are their application areas? Can each one of them substitute each other? What about the syntax? Is there anything common in these languages? Who has built these languages. What is needed to run these languages on our computer? What IDE or complier is needed?

How can you differentiate C, C++, Visual C++, C#, Visual C# ?
Lets start from the begining :)

In 1971 two computer engineers Kerringhan and Ritchie developed a language which could be portable to different machine, their objective was to develop a high level language which gives them power of a low level language and still have sufficiently human comprehensible code. The result was a language they named as C. The nomenclature came from an earlier language which was called BCPL or in short just B, so they termed thier langauge as C.

C became tremendously successful as it was powerful, easy to understand and easy to program with, giving a lot of flexibility to the programmer. It was termed as 'The Programmers´Language´ and one of the first sucess of C was UNIX which was written using C.

In late 70s when the computer programs were getting bigger and more complex, a new concept was introduced which was that of Object Oriented Programing (OOP). Richard Stroustrup started building the foundations of an Object Oriented version of C. His first results were a highly modified (in syntax and type checking etc) version of C and he named his new version C++, basing his name on the ++ operator used by C which increments the value by 1.

There were many IDE for both languages, most famous at the time were from Borland, named as Turbo C and Turbo C++.

Later, with the advent of Windows based Operating System and introduction of Microsoft Foundation Classes, Microsoft introduces its own versions of IDE for C and C++. Microsoft named them ´Visual C´and ´Visual C++´. Note that these two are not separate languages, but just new IDEs, though there were certain syntax restrictions put in by Microsoft, which makes them a little different from thier ANSI counterparts.

C# is another adventure of Microsoft which uses the CLR and .NET framework. This is a new language which appears to me more of a newer version of JAVA rather then C (both languages use a similar syntax and program architecture) as it incorporates more feature of a ´secure´JAVA then the loose barrelled C.

IDE for C# is called Visual C# carrying on the nomenclature of ´Visual´for Microsoft.

Reply:C is a subset of C++. C cannot do classes, operator overloading or templates whereas C++ can. C# is quite different, although it looks similar. It is a managed language, and a lot of behind the scenes stuff is taking place.

C is the fastest of these 3, but more limited in terms of features. C++ is slightly slower, but for the most part the performance difference is negligible. C# will execute slower than both in most cases, but again this difference is negligible. Being a managed language, C# has a lot of features to ease developer productivity, it is the ideal language for quickly creating applications that can perform moderately well.

This is similar to when you see a foreign language written, or hear a foreign language spoken...after a while you just get to know it and understand what it is. The more interest you take, the more detail you learn.

I think that it is your operating system. It can only recognize up to a certain amount of hard drive space.

Edit: I think it may be that you are using the FAT filesystem instead of NTFS.
Reply:Install the HDD in another PC and boot from CD using Knoppix then use cfdisk to delete all partition tables.

Make sure you save before you exit.
Reply:what a coincidence, the amount of of 32 and a bit gb is the total amount that a fat32 hdd (hence the name) supports so i'm going to predict that your problem is its a fat32 hdd partition, you can either take the rest of the space and make that a separate partition or you can reformat under the ntfs format, hope this helps

Doesn't sound like a bad partition setting at all.

--BUT!!! since both the BIOS and the OS recognize it as 32GB, I'm betting all my chips on you having an outdated BIOS, if you can get the BIOS VERSION information, and possible the MODEL/VERSION of your mother board, we will be in business.
Reply:You must have it formatted to one small partition and then have a lot of free space. You'll have to reformat it with a partition manager and set it to one big partition with no free space.

Why I cant format my 160 gb ide hard disk with the start disk using fat32?

I'm having problems installing this 160 gb hard disk, first when I was creating the partition (from fdisk) it told me the max size was around 15000 mb, then I guessed it is meant to be 150000 but there is just no space for the other digit, but when I go out and write format c: it tell me that format is not compatible with c: is that cuz the disk is too big? do I have to use NTFS?

Either format with NTFS or partition the drive into 2 sizes.

I would recomend approx 40GB for your System Disk and the rest for Data

Probably not. Your C compiler will probably have your IDE. If you are programming on Windows then you will most likely use a Borland product or Microsoft Visual Studio/C. On Linux, I bet most use the GNU utilities with their favorite editor Vim/Emacs. Below is an older link about IDE for C on Linux but if you type in "C IDE Linux" in your search engine you are going to get some good discussions on that.

Reply:To do a firmware update, you can NOT be in Windows. That is what the purpose of loading the firmware on a floppy disk, so that you can boot up the computer off the floppy and NOT the hard drive (with windows).

Follow the instructions to load the firmware update onto a floppy disk. When you insert the floppy disk in your computer and reboot it, the computer should read the floppy and start up the firmware update utility, and NOT boot up into Windows.

Reply:Just so you understand, this is a firmware update - this is the software that actually runs a piece of hardware such as a hard drive - apparently there is a potential problem which could be solved by installing this firmware update. The update is a program file that must first be installed onto a floppy disk that is formatted as a bootable disk. This way after the update program is copied to the floppy disk, you can insert the floppy disk into your computer, restart the computer and the computer will boot from the floppy disk instead of from your hard drive. So, first you have to make sure you even have a floppy disk drive (some newer computers don't), then you need to make a bootable floppy disk (do a search online to find out how), and then once you have this floppy disk ready the rest of the instructions should make sense.

MFM (Modified Frequency Modulation) drives required that the controller electronics be compatible with the drive electronics.

RLL (Run Length Limited) drives were named after the modulation technique that made them an improvement on MFM. They required large cables between the controller in the PC and the hard drive, the drive did not have a controller, only a modulator/demodulator.

ESDI (Enhanced Small Disk Interface) was an interface developed by Maxtor to allow faster communication between the PC and the disk than MFM or RLL.

The name comes from the way early families had the hard drive controller external to the drive. Moving the hard disk controller from the interface card to the drive helped to standardize interfaces, reducing cost and complexity.

The data cable was originally 40 conductor, but UDMA modes from the later drives requires using an 80 conductor cable (note that the 80 conductor cable still uses a 40 position connector.)

The interface changed from 40 pins to 39 pin. The missing pin acts as a key to prevent incorrect insertion of the connector, a common cause of drive and controller damage.

SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) was an early competitor with ESDI, originally named SASI for Shugart Associates. SCSI drives were standard on servers, workstations, and Apple Macintosh computers through the mid-90s, by which time most models had been transitioned to IDE (and later, SATA) family drives. Only in 2005 did the capacity of SCSI drives fall behind IDE drive technology, though the highest-performance drives are still available in SCSI and Fibre Channel only. SATA (Serial ATA). The SATA data cable has only one data pair for the differential transmission of data to the device, and one pair for receiving from the device. In 2005/2006 parlance, the 40 pin IDE/ATA is called "PATA" or parallel ATA, which means that there are 16 bits of data transferred in parallel at a time on the data cable.

SAS (Serial Attached SCSI). The SAS is a new generation serial communication protocol for devices designed to allow for much higher speed data transfers and is compatible with SATA. EIDE was an unofficial update (by Western Digital) to the original IDE standard, with the key improvement being the use of DMA to transfer data between the drive and the computer, an improvement later adopted by the official ATA standards. DMA is used to transfer data without the CPU or program being responsible to transfer every word. That leaves the CPU/program/operating system to do other tasks while the data transfer occurs.

Reply:Actually it doesn't matter as long as the HDD is selected as the boot device somewhere (whether it's set up as Floppy first, cd-rom second, and HDD as third... as long as it's in there somewhere !)

Master is typically the default ( no jumper ) setting, and your IDE cable, whether primary or secondary will access whichever has something connected. I have actually had my CD-rom as Master with HDD as slave on secondary IDE, and worked fine (did a dual boot w/ win2k as primary os on Primary IDE/Master, and a second bootable HDD with Win98 on it, secondary IDE/Slave).

Make sure Bios will auto-detect your HDD, and the boot-up will select the first bootable device in the order selected !

I'm using VS.NET 2003 Professional

Earlier i tried to use .Net Framework 2.0 against VS.Net 2003.At this time i reinstalled .Net Framework 1.1 %26amp; then i reverted back to my old framework 1.1 and uninstalled 2.0 Framework.

I got another error " Could not start C#.Net Compiler.So i used .Net installation CD to repair my current VS.Net IDE.

After that it started throwing the above said error on building the project.

I get this while trying to build solution"could not be instantiate the resource processor" in C#.Net project
Be sure to unistall the framework and vs completly. Otherwise you gotta format because you got the registry messed up.

select the control, go to the properties window click on the icon with lightening bolt on it and you will see the list of events, double click the event and there you go!

The MPLAB C18 compiler creates a hex file that you can load into a microcontroller. In your code, you would have specified what 'model' it is (ie. 18F452, 16F677 etc). The hex file is only compatible with that specific model.

To load the file into the microcontroller, you use a device called In-Circuit Debugger (ICD) or In-circuit Serial Programmer (ICSP). You may purchase these devices from Microchip.

For testing, you can download PIC Simulators and 'emulate' a PIC microcontroller on your PC.

I am a college student and have worked in C++ before but in the Unix environment. I just started using Visual C++ Express Edition (Version 8.0). I am using it for a data mining project. So I have to work with a MySQL database which is present on my local windows machine.

I have some very basic questions:

1.From the IDE when I try to create a new project (File-%26gt;New-%26gt;Project),I see three options. CLR, Win 32 and General. Each option has a few templates, I am not sure what do these options mean and what is the best option for me, can anyone explain this briefly ?

2.I want to use the BOOST library(for some algorithms) and MySQL++ library (connection to MySQL database) and STL. Where do I add these libraries to my project? Do I have to build them seperately ? What does building a library mean ?

CLR refers to managed C++. Managed C++ is the .NET version of C++, so if you are running standard C++ code, this is not what you want.

Win32 refers to Win32 applications. Only pick this if you are writing specific Win32 API code. That is, no console window. You know how to use the Win32 API. And so on.

I'm not sure what general means. Is there an option for command line? If not, general would refer to the command line programs. It's a good bet this is the kind of program you want to write.

Q2:

I don't recall the exact steps for adding libraries and includes. You'll have to open up the project settings. Somewhere, you should be able to add in include paths and lib paths. For each library you want to use, add the appropriate include folder to the include path list, and the library folder to the library path list.

You'll want to build the libraries you use before using them. Otherwise, you can't use them.

I have the Borland C++, and because of the heat the processor goes over the hedge. When I start the IDE the processor climbs up to 60 Celsius and then the Windows give's me the blue screen. Is it normal for C++ to put this much presure on my cpu? I have a AMD Athlon 3500+/ 2 Gb Ram/ Asus Mb. So the system is not a weak one. The borland software has been used by my highscholl for about 15 years, from my teacher I got it to work at home. Could the problem be that the software is too old?

Get the latest Borland C++ SW. If you are using the old one (from your school days), its designed for DOS and 80*88 processors. That should be the problem.

Alternately, you can run the C++ IDE (If it is DOS based) in command window launched by "cmd" command - not "command" command. Try this.

Building a Linux C++ project in Visual Studio?

I have a C++ project that compiles in linux using Makefiles. I want to edit this project using Visual Studio 2005 IDE. How can I get it to build?

The reason I want to use Visual Studio 2005 on Windows is because I like the IDE environment instead of using VI in Linux and running 'make' after every change.

Building a Linux C++ project in Visual Studio?
No matter what, if you want your program to run on linux, it's going to have to have linux available. You can't just hit the build/execute button in Visual Studio and expect it to run in linux. Even Cygwin can't help you there.

That said, it's perfectly possible to build *portable* C++ code in Visual Studio that compiles and executes in the same manner on both platforms. Simply use ANSI Standard C++. Yes, you'll lose out on a ton of features on both platforms, but it will at least *work* on both platforms. You could also target linux using Cygwin by linking against the Cygwin DLL, but you can't simply compile a binary using Visual Studio and have it work on linux.

You may want to try a linux-based C++ IDE, like KDevelop or Eclipse/CDT. (See sources below)
Reply:Hum, it's true that any version you compile using visual studio won't work on linux, but that's not the point. You can simply bring back the files on linux and gcc (or whatever) once you're satisfied with the result on windows, that way you need to use make only once.

To do that, you need to construct a console project in the visual studio IDE (if you have any kind of GUI stuff it's a bit more complicated), and add to it all your cpp/h files plus any specific compiler/options if there is any you want to use. It's possible that some things don't work exactly the same in the windows environment, use #if _MSC_VER to mark the code you need to change specifically for windows.

Other then that it should work quite easily

Reply:You can't. That's the short answer. It's because the visual studio environment is linking in libraries for Windows so your program won't work on Linux.

It sounds like what you need is more an IDE for Linux. Try taking a look at Eclipse http://www.eclipse.org/ It also appears to work on Windows XP so you can have a common environment between the two platforms if you do Windows development.

You’ll see two major recommendations over and over, which are good choices for beginners. The first is Visual C++. On a windows PC this is ideal. You can get a free version. Google for Visual C++ Express.

The second is gcc. They make a C++ compiler. The windows version is under the name MinGW. Bloodshed Dev-C++ and many other IDEs use MinGW.

You need to stay north of South Padre Island side, but also some bad locations there. I recommend living on or beyond saratoga but before yorktown,because that is considered the stix after that. If you want the lowest crime rate and best property, the best place is to move to Padre Island. It is only a five minute drive to cross the cosway and the atmosphere is much cleaner and nice. I live there.

Reply:There's books out there that offer a game programming guide with C++, but I would avoid them at all costs. Sure, you want to get into game programming, but it's quite difficult with C++. C++ is a complex language, so it's important you focus on learning the language first.

To that end, start with C++ Primer by Lippman or Accelerated C++ by Koenig. These are both recognized books by respected authors, and they are technically accurate. It will take you a while to learn C++ to a usable level, so you need to be patient. You won't be game programming initially, at least not with the fancy graphics you envision. There's a learning curve, and you can't skip it.

I don't recommend starting with C if you want to go the C++ route. I recommend learning C++ over C, but whatever you do, don't flip between them. Bad idea. You'll have to unlearn the programming idioms one introduces, learn a new language and the new idioms of that language.

It is not able to find the header files(in this case iostream.h)

open your compiler. Click options-%26gt;directories.

Then in the "include directory" column,

Enter the path to the header files.

(The files with .h extensions. Some are iostream.h

conio.h graphics.h)

suppose you have you header files at C:\programs\turboC\include.

Then type that path in that column.

Similarly you can see three other columns. The next one is library column. It is used to link you programs.

Enter the path where .bgi and .chr files are found in that place.

The next column is for where to place the output file.

The exe file created by compiler. You can place it anywhere. Similarly the fourth.

Then restart the compiler.

That's the new-fangled way to do header files, without the '.h'.

Well first Check all Connections and not just once but multiple times, I wish you would have listed your power supply.

Reply:If your floppy drive light is on constantly, you have it connected wrong. Turn off the PC, unplug the floppy drive ribbon cable from the back of the drive and flip it over. Plug it back in. That should work now. If don't need it, unplug it altogether.

Unknown keyboard and mouse is strange. Windows should plug and play them with no problems. Are they USB devices?

I have been working with computers for a long time, and not once have I ever seen an "Unknown Keyboard" or "Unknown Mouse" error. I have seen "Missing keyboard" errors. Is that what you mean?

If you don't have a working keyboard, you won't be able to install your operating system. Once you get your keyboard working enter your BIOS by pressing whatever key it says (usually tab, F1, F2, F8, Del). Set your boot order to begin with the CDROM and you should be able to boot off of the CD that you have for your OS (windows I assume)

1) Unplug Computer power supply and look inside to make sure you have power to all hardware and cables are all plugged in correctly.

Check to see what you have for master/slave settings.

2) Plug in power supply, keyboard, mouse and monitor.

3) Turn on computer and go to bios. System should tell you how to get to bios. Normal is F1 or Esc

Have settings for boot up with CD/ROM support 1st, then hard-drive.

4) Once these issues are fixed then load operating system and other hardware software.

5) On Mother Board lead issue: Check your paperwork on mother board to make sure your pins are place correctly on the mother board.

I have installed Visual Studio 2005. I would like to use IDE very efficiently. Can anybody tell me what are the new features available (with respect to IDE)? As well as I would like to know useful features available (may be present in earlier versions too) in VS 2005. I'm mainly using C# for development purpose. Also I heard that it's good for testing (like writing test cases). Is it true? How we can integrate VS 2005 with PVCS? What are the short cut keys available (except Menus)?

2005 is so much better than 1.x. There are a myriad of new freatures in 2.0. You can use MasterPages for your website layouts. There are web parts that would enable a web user to customize a webpage by being able to shift elements around on the page. The DataGrid was replaced by GridView, which is easier to work with. You can also use SqlDataSource to populated Data Controls. The SqlDataSource will save you time so you don't have to write connection code.

2.0 now has local database support. You can add a database right to your APP_DATA folder, which you'll be able to build and connect to with ease. You can only access this database from the project you are working in. If you want to make the database live on a webhost, you have to copy the .mdf or generate script to move it.

Classes now have a keyword called "Partial", which would allow you to have the same class name over many areas. This is so, if you are working in a team environment, many co-workers can work on their own version of the same class without writing over each others' code. At compile time, these same files will be compiled together.

There is just too many things to list on here. If I were you, I would go to ASP.NET QuickStarts and go from there. There is a lot of information you can learn from there.

Also, if you haven't already, download the startkits from ASP.NET. The starterkits are useful and powerful, and not just some cheesy website example.

I bought an IDE to USB Cable for my Hard drive, and I'm having trouble with it. Help?

I bought a cable that would connect my IDE hard drive to my USB 2.0 port. In the bottom right hand corner of the screen, it shows that it's connected, but it's not in "My Computer". The installation guide just said to set the jumpers to Master, and plug it in. No drivers were needed since I have XP. I've also tried setting the jumpers to slave and it's still doesn't work. I've restarted with it plugged in, but that just messes things up because my computer doesn't know which drive to boot from, so i have to go to the BIOS and tell it to boot from C, because when the jumpers are set to Master, I have two Master Hard drives. I've also restarted with it plugged in as a Slave. I bought this on eBay, so I'm expecting a very slow response time, so I wanted to see if any one here knew.

Most likely the drive just doesn't have a letter associated with it.

On the start menu click on run

Clear whatever is there and put in compmgmt.msc and hit enter

In the window that opens there will be a storage section

Choose disk management from the storage section

In the bottom right hand section see if there is a drive with no letter assigned...you might have to scroll

Right click it and then choose Change Drive Letters and Paths.

Give it a drive letter (the box will be blank).

You may have to restart

If the drive isn't listed in that disk management piece, you have bigger problems!

If it is an internal disk drive, then the connector it has is either IDE or SATA. You need a converter so the disk can plug into another computer, IDE or SATA to USB so you can plug it in to the USB port.

Without this, you will have to install the drive into another computer as a slave drive.
Reply:I agree with the first answer. There are hardware kits for about $25 that have a plug for the back connector of a regular hard drive's IDE. The kit will also include a power brick to provide voltage for the hard drive and the other end of the hard drive cable will be a USB plug. A similar setup to the above mentioned kit is a cabinet box for about $50 to make the drive an external hard drive.

The kit or box will also convert an internal IDE DVD burner to an external device that connects via USB. I personally have a box with an additional Firewire plug for my extra hard drives and DVD burners.

The IDE is a 25-pin connector plug using a flat-ribbon cable.

You could also boot your computer with DOS, FreeDOS or Linux (if your drive is not formatted NTFS) and copy files to a folder outside of Windows to retrieve later. This method would require you know the DOS file commands. But I mention this to explain why you cannot copy Win files while Win is running.

Its the first time I've heard this device that you mentioned, but USB means Universal Serial Bus while IDE, HELL I don't know what it means. but i know its the flat cable connection between your hard drive, cd drive and floppy drive to your motherboard.

hey guys, recently when i tried to turn on my computer it did not detct my IDE drives! in the screen which said so. instead there were two beeps! i removed my computer and changed the plugs, it worked for some time but now it started again, is it C-MOS? pls help!

You need to go to the manufacturers web site that made your IDE drive , they will offer free software that will test your hard drive, you will have to download this from another PC. It will tell you if it is failing. It is NOT your Cmos. In the BIOS you can turn on smart monitoring, sometimes that will tell you if your drive is failing.
Reply:One of your IDE drives is failing. Either that or one of the cables connecting them is failing. Most likely, it would be a hard drive. I'd reccommend getting another and installing it as the slave to your main HD, that way you can copy as much of your stuff over before the main one fails. I've seen this countless times...
Reply:Before buying a new hard drive, change the IDE cable. Most often it is twisted and turned, and if you play with your pc a lot, they break. After that you can try an different IDE slot to see. But I bet you it is the cable.

Ok, I'm starting to learn C. And like the idea of writing programs in notepad and then compiling them on the command prompt.

And cygwin is very good with this. The only thing is that it takes a lot of space in my hard disk and I don't need all the other tools or the Unix environment... I just need the compiler (gcc in cygwin).

Is there any other download that only downloads the compiler. Or do you recommend me some simple IDE with compiler that doesn't have a lot of stuff. I just don't want to get blurred with all the IDE's details and stuff. I just want to learn C.

Is there any other option instead of cygwin for C compilers?
What I did when I only had one computer is install VMware server and create some virtual computers/servers with Linux on it... Now, since disk space is a factor, I'd suggest you take a look at

IMO, you would have much more fun programming under some light linux distribution... For that, just download the VMware Server (they give free serial keys from the VMware website), get a light distro ( http://www.linuxlinks.com/Distributions/... ) and get gcc working on it. Then you'll be able to use sockets, play around with devices and anything there is on the linux virtual system, w/o being afraid to mess things up on your principal operating system; the virtual machines do not interfere with the principal OS.

If you need anymore help with this, just post what you chose to do and what problem you're coming up with!

Can you buy 3.5" IDE to USB adaptors and new jumper shunts for the IDE hard drives?

I lost the jumper shunt for my hard drive (E), so now I can't connect it without messing with the other hard drive (C) or CD drive (D). The E drive is now set to Slave as there's no jumper. So my only options now are to somehow get a new shunt, or get a IDE to USB adaptor. Are 3.5" IDE shunts supported among all brands of hard drives, or does each brand require a specific kind?

Also if I get the adaptor, will there be any need for a shunt?

Please answer as soon as possible as the E drive I'm trying to connect is currently not working, and I have almost 160gb worth of files on it that I'm gonna try to recover.

shunts are a dime a dozen - I probably have a billion of them - ebay and you might get some cheap. They are universal. Any of them from anywhere.

go to a tech store and ask for a jumper - they'll probably give you one.

PHP development IDE for Linux?

One of the downfalls of Linux is there isn't a "Dreamweaver replacement". Quanta sucks and is buggy. Komodo IDE looks good, but it's pricey (Komodo Edit is a nice editor, but doesn't have the project management features I want.) I can't get Aptana/Eclipse to work on my AMD64 Ubuntu machine.

What I've kinda been envisioning is a combination project based on gPHPedit and gFTP. gPHPedit is a nice php editor, but there are no ftp options, and I don't mean just being able to open a file on an FTP site. If you've ever used Dreamweaver, you know how the project manager/local/remote files part works. That is what I want added to gPHPedit.

Where would I get started if I wanted to do something like this? gPHPedit and gFTP are both C/GTK+ so that should be ideal, the source from one should be fairly reusable with the other. I have done quite a bit of C/C++ programming, but it was a few years ago (mostly doing web based PHP now). GTK+ is new to me.

Sata mode "ide"?

hi there

basically i am trying to configure my p.c to use my 160gb sata drive as primary,my 120gb pata drive as a storage drive and a dvdrw as a single optical drive

i have looked in my mobo manual and it says i need to set sata mode to "ide",then onchip serial ata to [enhanced]

i apparenly then can use up to 2 x sata drives and then 4 ide drives(2 master and 2 slave)

is this correct?and of not how do you configure this?

also when you add just 1 ide drive into the ide1 sockey(when sata 1 is primary)what jumper setting do you set the ide drive(master or slave)

Assuming you do not have any OS installed on the PATA drive then the bios will not boot form that one.

Assuming your OS is on the SATA drive and does not boot up, then you need to select in your bios which device to use.

In my bios (and in many) you select IDE or "bootable addin cards" (which are your SATA ports).

If I select "none" then the bios will try to boot off IDE, CDROM etc. If I select "bootable add-in cards" then the bios will boot from the SATA ports first.

Depending on your BIOS, you may be able to select which SATA drive the bios boots off.

I have 6 SATA drives and 1 IDE in my PC, I used to boot off the IDE, but now it just boots from the SATA drive with the OS on. Of course the bios cannot boot from SATA drives which does not have a OS on, though it may try to if it has a boot record on it.

Get the SATA drive to boot first without the IDE one plugged in, get that working first, then put your IDE drive in. I don't know if the IDE is a new drive (IE blank) but if you have problems you can always format it.

You will have to look at your bios manual to configure the boot drives. Normally it is just called "bootable add-in cards" but it could be called other things. A little research is needed!

SATA drives do not have a master/slave select.

IDE drives do, jumpers are normally marked on the drive somewhere. 1 master and 1 slave per IDE cable.

Regardless of setting, if the bios is set to boot from SATA then it will not touch the IDE drives (try to boot ). Only thing you have to do is select the jumpers on the IDE drives.

I personally would forget IDE drives and just use SATA drives anyway.

Reply:First things first, you need to make sure there is no boot record on the PATA drive you are using.

The reason for this is that some computers for some reason still search for a boot record off PATA before SATA.

If there was an installation of windows on the PATA drive, the computer will most likely try to boot off that first.

As far as what jumper you need to set the drive at, MASTER is the proper jumper setting for a single drive configuration.

1) Do I just attach the new hard drive to the free port on the motherboard? Or do I attach it to the ribbon that's connected to the existing hard drive?

2) Are ATA, P/ATA and IDE Hard Drives the exact same thing just with different names?

Before Installation

Installing a hard drive is a medium level job. You can do it, but it might not be fun. If you are confident in yourself and would like to save the money a computer guy would charge to do it, go ahead and do it yourself. It won't be that bad.

The worst part about installing hard drives is setting the jumpers on the drive so that it works correctly with your current hardware. Luckily, the newer Serial ATA drives do not require you to change jumper settings, and so they're very easy to install. If you have a motherboard with a free SATA port and are willing to spend a bit more on the drive, getting an SATA drive instead of an IDE or SCSI one may result in less frustration.

You should plan out the new layout of your drives in your case; if you are adding another drive, try to keep it on a separate channel from your optical drives, as optical drives usually use an older, slower protocol from hard drives and thus will slow the hard drives on the channel down to the speed of the old protocol.

You will need:

Hard drive

Copy of the hard drive manual (if you need to set jumpers; this can be downloaded if your drive didn't come with one)

Controller card (optional; use this if you don't have a spare connector on the motherboard or space on an existing ribbon cable to connect your drive to. Make sure you get one that matches your drive - Serial ATA for an SATA drive; ATA/100 or ATA/133 for an IDE drive; SCSI for a SCSI drive.)

Data cable for the drive (if you aren't installing the drive as a slave on an existing cable)

Power cable Y-splitter (if you don't have a spare four-pin power connector)

Ultimate Boot CD (if you want to clone your old hard drive to your new one)

How will you be using your new drive?

If you are replacing your primary hard drive, make sure you back up any data you want to save before you start. If you don't want to reinstall Windows, you can clone the contents of your old hard drive to your new one using the setup utilities that hard drive manufacturers provide, or you can use a specific cloning program like HDClone or PC Inspector Clone Maxx. All of the above-mentioned utilities are available on the Ultimate Boot CD (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/), so you can download and burn that and then choose the utility that is easiest for you to understand. (If you don't have access to a high-speed internet connection, you can order a CD for a small fee.)

If you are willing to reinstall Windows, make sure you have disks for Windows and all your programs. This will prevent problems further into the installation process.

If you are simply installing a secondary hard drive for storage, you don't have to make any changes to the configuration of your current hard drive. However, you will need to set jumpers if you are installing an IDE or SCSI drive, in order to tell the computer that your new drive is not the primary drive.

Setting Jumpers: IDE Drives

IDE can accommodate two drives per channel, with most computers having two channels built in (although newer Intel motherboards that accept LGA775 chips only have one channel). The primary drive on a channel is called the Master, and the secondary one is called the Slave. The IDE channels are also labeled as Primary (or IDE1) and Secondary (or IDE2). The hard drive that the system boots from is usually the primary master, generally if you're adding a second hard drive you would set it up as the primary slave. (The secondary master and slave are usually used for optical drives, although they can accommodate hard drives if needed.)

Most drives come set to be used as masters, so if you want to use one as a slave, you'll have to change the jumpers, which are located between the power connector and the IDE connector. Each manufacturer has different jumper settings, so I can't give you exact instructions here. However, there is often a diagram on the top of the drive telling you how to set the jumpers, and if not there will certainly be instructions in your hard drive's manual (which you can download from the manufacturer's website if your hard drive didn't come with one).

Another jumper setting, which you can use if you have an 80-conductor ribbon cable, is Cable Select. 80-conductor cables can be identified by their much finer wires compared to 40-conductor cables and by their connector colors (the motherboard end will be blue, red, or green, and the drive connectors will be black for the one on the end and gray for the one on the middle). With both drives set to Cable Select, the computer will recognize the drive hooked up to the black end connector as the master and the one hooked up to the middle gray connector as the slave.

Setting Jumpers: SCSI Drives

SCSI (pronounced "skuzzy") is not as common as it used to be, but if you are using a server or high-end workstation, chances are you will have SCSI drives. You can have up to 15 devices on a SCSI chain, compared to two on an IDE channel; each one needs a unique "SCSI ID" so that the controller knows which one is which. Your first SCSI device will have ID 0, your second, ID 1, and so on. SCSI drives usually have jumpers on them that you can use to set the ID. They are often arranged in a base-2 setup - depending on whether a jumper is closed or not, it will add a certain amount to the SCSI ID. The following chart gives all the possibilities for SCSI ID configurations:

Physical Installation

Now's when you actually take off the case and get your hands dirty.

Turn the computer off, unplug it, and take the case off. At this point, you may want to make some quick sketches of just how everything is in there: Which direction is everything facing? Where and how are the cables connected? For some people, such sketches help to put everything back when you are done.

If you are replacing your old hard drive, remove the cables from the old drive. You will see both a wide IDE ribbon cable and a small 4-pin power plug. Do not force them out. The ribbon cable is usually quite easy to remove. Sometimes, though, the power connector can become stuck. Just rock it back and forth (lengthwise along the narrow side of the drive), taking care not to rip the connector off the drive. Then remove the mounting screws that hold the drive to the case frame. Sometimes, you may need to tip the case or get into some strange positions to reach all the screws; other times, the hard drive is mounted in a cage that you'll be able to take out to get to the other side of the drives. Finally, remove the old drive from the case. Be sure not to bump anything too hard on the way out.

If you are replacing the old drive, slide the new drive in right where the other one came out. If you are adding a second drive, just pick any empty drive bay - one a bit below the current drive might work best, because it will make it easier to route cables. If you are installing a 3.5" drive into a 5.25" drive bay, you may need to add rails or a mounting bracket to make it fit. Screw the drive into place, making sure the screws aren't going in crooked. Don't force them.

If you need a separate controller card, install it now into any unused motherboard slot.

Attach the cables to the hard drive and to the motherboard or controller card if necessary. There are two cables: the ribbon cable (or SATA cable) and the power cable. The ribbon cable goes from the controller to the drive. Most cables are keyed to the connector so they only go in one way; if the cable isn't going in, try flipping it over. Don't force it. If you are adding a second drive, simply choose a connector on the same ribbon cable that is not used. Most IDE ribbon cables come with three connectors: one on the end (usually black) and one mid-way (usually gray), then one further away on the other end which connects to the motherboard (usually blue, green, or red). In general, the master drive should use the black connector on the end and the slave should use the gray connector in the middle, but if each drive is set either as master or slave, the position is not as important. On a SCSI hard drive, position of the drives on the cable does not matter at all.

If you are installing a SCSI drive, check for the correct termination. In SCSI setups, the adapter can hold up to seven SCSI devices. These devices are hooked up in a chain, usually with the adapter at one end and another device at the other end. This ending device must be set to be the terminating device, therefore ending the SCSI chain. Usually, SCSI devices come with a terminator plug. In some cases, the adapter is in the middle of the chain, therefore you must terminate at both ends of the chain. You may need to consult the manual for any special termination techniques particular to your brand of drive.

Plug the system in and turn it on. It is best to leave the case cover off for now in case you need to fiddle with something or troubleshoot the installation.

If you did not use a controller card, enter the BIOS (usually by pressing the F1, F2, F10, F12, or Delete key when you see the Power-On Self-Test or the manufacturer logo). Check the BIOS to in the IDE section to make sure that the drives are all being recognized. If you installed a drive on a connector that was not in use, you may have to set the corresponding drive to "Auto." If your BIOS has an auto-detect feature, you can use that as well. If you did use a controller card, it will pop up a screen showing the name of the card and any drives it has detected.

If the drives are not being recognized, check that both power and data cables are in tightly (including the motherboard end for the data cables), and that the jumpers are set correctly. If they are all recognized correctly, let's move to the next section.

Software Installation/Cloning

Now that your new drive is installed, we can move on and get it set up with Windows. If you are replacing your current drive and cloning it to your new drive, you will need to connect both drives. Change any necessary jumpers (see "Setting Jumpers" above) so that both drives as well as a CD drive are recognized. At this stage it is not important to screw in your old drive; you can just rest it somewhere convenient, but don't leave it hanging in midair. Boot from the Ultimate Boot CD, and select the utility you want to use to clone the drive. Go through the appropriate prompts, making sure to select your older drive as the source and your newer one as the destination (pay careful attention to the hard drive sizes indicated by the cloning program). You don't want to clone your new drive with nothing on it to your old drive with all your data!

If you are replacing your current drive but not cloning its contents to the new drive, put your Windows CD in the drive and boot from it. You will be prompted during the first part of setup to partition and format your drive; if you are using Windows 2000 or XP, make sure to use the NTFS file system.

If you are simply installing a secondary drive, boot into Windows. In Windows 2000 and XP, your new drive will not appear at all in My Computer until you format it. In Windows 9x/ME, it will appear, but you will need to right-click on the new drive and choose "Format" from the menu.

To format the drive in Windows 2000 or XP, right-click on My Computer and go to "Manage". In the window that comes up, click Disk Management in the left pane. Once it loads, you should see an "Initialize Disk" wizard pop up. Partition and format the disk to your liking, but make sure not to convert it to a dynamic disk, as doing so will provide plenty of annoyances down the road.

so you should be able to put four drives total in your unit, one of then being your cd/dvd rom drive.

1 Connect it to the ribbon... Make sure one is Master and one is Slave (see the jumpers on the back).

2 ATA, SATA and IDE (EIDE) are NOT the same thing. IDE drives are usually ATA (regarding transfer). SATA is a serial (read high speed ATA) and are NOT EIDE. PATA is parallel ATA, also, not a IDE, but it might be possible to find PATA drives that are IDE (Enhanced IDE, EIDE) compatible.

I need to know which GUI programming language has the most promising future of being used for the next 10 years, is already widely used in multi-platform programs and games and what ide to learn it on. Example: If you suggest C++ should i use Visual C++ or what? keeping in mind that i would want to use the language on game engines and other platforms too.

Go with Java or VB.NET or C# .NET.

Personally, I love the Java language and use the Eclise IDE. I also do some windows programming in C#.

VB kinda sucks, IMHO, but C# is a fairly elegant language as is Java, and they will both be around for quite some time. Java especially will be around as there is a ton of code out there written in Java. C# is sort of Microsoft's answer to Java and doesn't quite have the same number of programs written using it. With either you will be marketable for some time to come-- if you are good.
Reply:There is different kind of platform for writing C/C++ codes. Borland, Microsoft,... in Windows and some others in Linux. what is clear is that games don't use classes which are inherited in Visual C/Borland C, maybe only in programming Firefox and Internet explorer. but they use another packages like OpenGL, DirectX and ... to program such games and graphical interfaces, in all of which you need to know C++. C++ is not related to Visual C or whatever. this is the base you need to know.

The common disadvantages of Java? Well, Java programs typically run a LOT slower than C++ programs, that's why Java isn't used for fast games. Also, Java requires a virtual machine to run on and that virtual machines takes a while to load. On the other hand: Java runs on a lot of different computers. It does lend itself very well for programming games for cell phones and stuff.

But my pet peeve against Java is the way it is given its version numbers: "Java 2, Enterprise Edition, version 5.0.0 Update 10." WTF????

Reply:C++ is used to make the products you mentioned, but for multiple platforms I would assume that Java is the way to go. I use Emacs for my IDE.
Reply:C++ is used for all of those. MS probably uses Visual C++ to do Windows, but I'm not 100% sure, and most game studios use C++ and Visual C++ as well.

I would recommend learning the .NET framework. .NET has the biggest chance of being around in 10 years.

Can anyone help me write a "Hello World" DLL console app. using MS C++ compiler ? Without using the Visual Studio .NET IDE.

(It seems to be next to impossible getting a simple answer for that question, by trawling the web)

Here are the steps:

1. Open the Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt window. Note: The Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt automatically sets up the correct path to the Visual C++ compiler and any needed libraries, so it is used instead of the regular Command Prompt window.

2. At the command prompt, type notepad and press Enter. In notepad select the File menu and save the file as hello.cpp and press Enter.

In Notepad, type the following lines:

A console app is simple. A DLL is a bit more work. I've never called a DLL from a console app, so I would have to check if that's even possible. Let us know what it is that you're trying to do.
